Ghana Health and Education Initiative
June-July, 2007
One Cover Africa executive board member spent five weeks in Ghana coordinating a project with GHEI for the upcoming winter, and piloting the program with three other volunteers. This work included initial malaria need indicator surveys and initial net distribution, as well as net re-treatment and education outreach.

Kip Keino Volunteers
May 13th, 2007
Cover Africa Executive board members volunteered to help run the Kip Keino mile race, phone-a-thon and shoe drive. Legendary Olympic runner Kip Keino held the first inaugural Kip Keino mile-run in Ithaca, NY on May 13th. Members of Cover Africa participated in ticket sales, a day long phone-a-thon, and tent-raising on the day of the event. The proceeds of this event went to building schools and orphanages in Kenya. Kill the Buzz: Fight Malaria Benefit Concert
May 3rd, 2007
This benefit concert was held at the Nines, and featured Dos Noun and Blue Sky Mission Club. Between performers we held a malaria education segment, and admissions proceeds went towards purchasing bed nets. Dos Noun, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a modern rap and freestyle artist currently traveling the Northeast promoting his first album “Paper Animals.” For this event, he wrote a rap song about malaria. Blue Sky Mission Club: “Blue Sky Mission Club is a band that's right on time, funky and inspiring.   Practicing the age old tradition of playing music people love to dance to, their sound is a unique blend of soul, country, zydeco and rock traditions.” This event was sponsored by Cover Africa and Cornell Chapters of Excellence to raise awareness and money to purchased bed nets. Over 60 people attended.

04Word07 Conference in Syracuse
April 30th
Two members of Cover Africa’s executive board were guest speakers at this Syracuse conference that was held to promote education and awareness about malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. Approximately 800 high school and middle school students attended.

International Conference on Health and the Environment
April 19th, 2007
Two Cover Africa members attended the 16th Annual International Conference on Health and the Environment at the United Nations on April 19th, 2007, to help further our own education, to better educate our peers.

Malaria Awareness Poster Campaign
April-May 2007
Cover Africa sponsored a poster campaign to raise awareness about malaria, and its consequences world wide. Over 100 posters were put up in prominent locations around Cornell.

Darfur Week
March 26-30, 2007
Darfur Awareness Week events included a March 27 screening of ‘Darfur Diaries’, a documentary featuring interviews with Darfuri refugees, and a question-and-answer session with filmmaker Aisha Bain; a lecture by John Prendergast, a former policy adviser to Bill Clinton and currently senior adviser of the International Crisis Group and co-founder of the ENOUGH Campaign, March 28; a panel discussion on Darfur, March 29; and exhibits. Finally, on March 30 a benefit concert was held to help the victims of Darfur. The student-organized, campus wide event was sponsored by Americans for Informed Democracy, Amnesty International, Cover Africa, Students for Tolerance, Awareness and Remembering Survivors, and numerous other groups.

Ithaca High School Cover Africa Chapter Established
March 25th, 2007
Elisabeth Stern, VP of Advocacy, gave a speech with Ms. Faustina Boakye at Ithaca High School and a display was set up discussing various options and opportunities for involvement. Materials were provided by United Nations Foundation and Americans for Informed Democracy.

Nicholas Kristof Supports Cover Africa
March 25th, 2007
Members of the Executive Board of Cover Africa were invited to have lunch with and meet with Nicholas Kristof to learn about drawing people to a cause. Later that day, Nicholas Kristof spoke to over 600 students and faculty about Darfur. During that speech, he stopped to publicly commend Cover Africa for their hard work in the fight against malaria.

National Malaria Awareness Day
March 25th, 2007
In coordination with Cornell Health International, Cover Africa honored National Malaria Awareness Day by tabling on Ho Plaza as well as setting up poster displays in Starbucks and Collegetown Video in Ithaca, NY. Seventy-one businesses in the Ithaca area were sent letters promoting awareness about malaria. We sold ribbons which people purchased for $1 to show their solitude with those fighting malaria every day in Africa.

Documentary Screening: Malaria Killer Number One
March 15th, 2007
Cover Africa held a screening of the documentary: Malaria Killed Number One in order to educate students as to just how important a cause fighting malaria is. “Filmed in Ethiopia, this documentary is a vivid account of the suffering of people struck by this disease and charts the challenges the international community faces in combating one of the worlds deadliest diseases.”- Sudan Tribune, Aug. 2007 This event was co-sponsored by Americans for Informed Democracy It was held at Willard Straight Hall, Art Gallery, at 5:30pm, and about 20 people attended.

Nonprofit Fair

Cover Africa was invited to participate in Cornell’s Nonprofit and Government Career Fair, which allowed us to meet other Nonprofit leaders and also to recruit students.

Vieux Farka Toure Fight Malaria Concert
February 27, 2007
The Vieux Farka Toure Fight Malaria Concert was held at Robert Purcell Community Center at 7:30pm. Vieux Farka Touré is a Malian singer and guitarist, and son of one of the African continent's most internationally renowned musicians Ali Farka Touré. Throughout 2007, Vieux is bringing the energy and charisma that has mesmerized audiences in Africa and Europe to the US for the first time; uniting African and American musicians to create a thrilling mix of styles and sounds.  He is touring internationally on a "fight malaria" concert tour. All proceeds go to net production and distribution in Mali. One of the first stops on his tour was at Cornell University. About 70 people attended. For more information and tour dates and cities:

Meeting with Ghanaian Deputy Ambassador, Irene Addo
January 29th, 2007
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ghana’s independence, Cornell students and faculty planned a year long celebration of Ghana’s culture and history.  To kick off the celebration, Ghanaian Deputy Ambassador to the US, her Excellency Irene Addo, gave a presentation on the state of Ghana and met with members of Cover Africa and various campus organizations.

International Video Conference

representatives and young adults in Ecuador, Burkina Faso, and Ghana, as well as multiple educational institutions in the United States, Scott Case, Chief Operating Officer at Malaria No More, Dr. George Dimopoulos, Professor of the Bloomberg School of Public Health; and Dr. Daniel Hussar, Professor at The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and moderated by Seth Green, President of Americans for Informed Democracy. Canvassing for Malaria Eradication
Mid-January, 2007
New York members of the Cover Africa Executive Board canvassed in New York City and volunteered at an NBA store event to publicly launch Nothing But Nets, a national campaign to fight malaria in sub-Saharan Africa led by The UN Foundation, NBA Cares, and inspired by Rick Reilly. They appeared on morning news shows to gain publicity for the Gates Foundation's announcement of their match participation in Nothing But Nets.

“Malaria Boot Camp” Conference and Advocacy Event
January 3rd-4th, 2005
This event was held at Hunter College and was run by Americans for Informed Democracy (‘Veto the Squito»), and The United Nations Foundation (Nothing But Nets). It allowed Cover Africa executive board members to share ideas with other students who were working on malaria campaigns at their respective schools. Also attending were leaders from UNICEF, the UNF, Malaria No More, Nothing but Nets, and about 250 other students.
