Swing Dancing is Alive and Well !

Swing is danced in most major cities in the U.S. and Canada, plus many cities around the world. Join this close-knit global community by learning Lindy Hop, the original swing dance. Here's how.

Why Swing Dance?

1. Make friends easily. Swing dancers are typically friendlier than the general public, and the common enthusiasm of the dance ensures good rapport and starts the conversation.  If you are new to any city in the world, just find the local swing scene and you are good to go.

2. Get free housing. Not only are swing dancers friendly, they are also trustworthy and hospitable. In the global swing community, you can literally email a swing scene you are visiting for the first time, and have a local dancer allow you to stay for a few days free. This is especially true if you are visiting for a lindy exchange.

3. Look young & live long*. If living till 94 isn't proof, we don't know what is. Frankie Manning, one of the originators of swing dancing, stayed youthful and healthy by dancing lindy hop regularly right up to his death on April 27, 2009. See an interview with him in 2007 below; does he look 92?

4. It's a versatile dance. Swing is a general term that includes Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, Balboa, Blues and Jazz among other styles. Knowing a couple of these dances allows you to dance to a variety of music from slow tempo (< 60bpm) to fast (> 200bmp). The lindy hop (video below) in particular is extremely versatile, having a visually impressive basic step that allows infinite opportunities for improvisation. Jazz routines enable fun line dances such as the Shim Sham (video below), or come in handy in the absence of a partner.

5. It's an original American art form.This is an excellent opportunity to explore American culture, music, and history.
