Announcements

don’t want to blog, please check it out regularly for up-to-date
information on what’s going on.
- Campus Life Green Team is forming an outreach team with students in the
Sustainability Hub and Roots & Shoots. It would be great to have KyotoNOW!
students in it too. Please let Carlos know if you want to get involved
(cmr55). General meetings for the Green Team are on every other Friday
(not this Friday) at 11PM in the Residential Programs Office (Dickson
Hall).
- Check out “Total Denial,” a film that’s part of the Environmental
Justice series sponsored by Roots and Shoots. It will be on Sunday at 6PM
in G1 Auditorium of Uris Hall.
- Potential joint cleanup with the Cornell Outing Club on Sunday at 4PM.
More information to come.
- Powershift 2007 will take place on November 2-5. We need 15-20
Cornellians to go to this conference.
- Mark Orlowski from the Sustainable Endowments Institute will speak at
Cornell on Sept. 24th @ 7:30PM in GS Louis Auditorium (Basement).
- Michael Mann, a climatologist, will be speaking at Cornell about
paleoclimate (evidence of past climate changes) @ 3PM in Kennedy
Auditorium on Sept. 28th. E-mail sjr34 for more information.
Projects Overview
- New York Climate Summit 2007: Bringing campus and community
organizations from around the state to Cornell to 1) train activists on
effective energy campaigns, and 2) agree on a statewide plan to put
pressure on Albany for legislation binding the state to reduce its
greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050. First meeting on Monday @ 5PM in GS
142.
- Sustainable Investment Initiative: forming a coalition of student
organizations to ensure that Cornell invests in sustainable and
responsible companies.
- Green Energy Fee: creating a fee to fund renewable energy/energy
efficiency projects. May include $10,000 prize from Break the Oil
Addiction. Options include creating a fund with the BOA prize, making the
fee mandatory, going back to the SA and talking about engaging students,
making slope day live earth day, or creating renewable energy fund for
alumni.
- Energy Independent Caroline: see attached document. Making the Town of
Caroline a model of sustainability and clean energy. Projects include work
in wind energy, energy efficiency, outreach, and much more!
- North Campus Outreach Team (new, to be discussed next week): speaking to
students in North Campus Residence Halls about sustainability, what they
can do, and how they can get involved.
- Biodiesel: potentially producing biodiesel using Cornell Dining waste
vegetable oil.
- Trainings: Anna will lead trainings on weekends. We will prioritize
trainings on highest preference. More updates on this next week.
Training Options
- Anna (anna.starr.rose@gmail.com) will lead trainings during the next 3
weeks. The options right now are Action Planning, Meeting Facilitation,
Non-Violent Direct Action, Campaign Strategy, and Media. Stay tuned for
dates on these.
Project Updates
- The Sustainable Investment Coalition will meet on Monday with
representatives from other student organizations. The meeting will be at
5PM in GS 142. See attachment for general information about the coalition.
Meeting this weekend in the Green Dragon Café (Sibley Hall) @ 3:30PM to
create Campaign Matrix.
- New York Climate Summit: For locations, Maria (ms463) will look into
Appel, RPCC, Goldwin Smith, and MVR to see which one is available for the
summit from Nov. 16-18. Maria will also draft a donation request letter
for food (to be sent to Greenstar, Cornell Dining, Clifbars, Wegmans, and
Tops). We’ll need 6 meals for about 100 people. Carlos (cmr55) will send
invitations and surveys (with Amanda from NYU) to potential attendants.
Carlos will also speak to Environmental Advocates of NY for an update on
the bill in Albany (see attached). Speakers brainstormed are Franz Litz
(see attached bio), Dean Koyanagi, and professors in Earth and Atmospheric
Sciences. For Housing, Carlos will write up request letter and send to
Whitby and Eco-House. Kenny will do Talyride and Eco-Annex. Amy will do
Triphammer. Fil will do 660 Stewart. We’ll request funding from
departments (NTRES, EAS, Human Ecology, etc.). Finally, Katherine (kmp35)
will be our Press person.
