Incoming Students Asalamu alaikum and welcome to Muslim Educational and Cultural Association (MECA), the Muslim student organization at Cornell University. This page is intended for those who are considering Cornell for higher education. We invite you to join our active community. The information below is general and applicable for both undergraduate and graduate students. For details, please get in touch with the Eboard -- we would love to hear from you! Questions and details about Cornell University can be found at the university web page http://www.cornell.edu/.
Arrival Incoming students can fly to Tompkins County Airport, which is a 15 minute drive from the university. Please let us know if you would like a Muslim brother or sister to receive you at the airport. If you have not made housing arrangements in advance, inform us and we will try our best to provide initial accommodation. There are also several hotels in close proximity to campus, in descending order by cost:
Comprehensive lodging and visitor information may be found at: http://www.visitithaca.com/ We recommend contacting the hotel far in advance for reservations.
Orientation We'd be delighted to provide a tour of the campus and help you locate and acclimatize to necessary facilities such as grocery stores, restaurants, bookshops, International Students and Scholars Organization (ISSO) office, departmental offices etc. Also, MECA hosts a new student welcome event during orientation week (a week before classes start). This year it will be held in the Cul-di-snack Cafe located in Anabel Taylor, at 3pm on Saturday, August 27. It's a great way to meet other new Muslims on campus!
Facilities To help maintain our Islamic identity at Cornell University, there are several facilities provided and sustained by the community. Most important among these are: 1) Prayer room centrally located on campus at 218 Anabel Taylor Hall. Congregational prayers are held and the key to the room is publicly available to suit people's personal schedules. Prayer schedules are posted on our web page. 2) MECA mailing lists: These lists have updated information on our activities, issues pertaining to the Muslim Ummah (worldwide community), discussions, etc. See the mailing list page for more information on how to subscribe to these free lists.
