In March 2011, we selected 5 volunteers to, for the third year in a row, participate in Machik’s Summer Enrichment Program. For the past two summers, Cornell volunteers have had an amazing experience teaching rural Tibetan students in Chengdu, Sichuan, and we are excited to be able to connect more volunteers with Machik and this wonderful volunteering opportunity.

In summer 2010, we sent five selected Cornell students (Jade Mandel ‘13, Yuni Choi ‘13, Meredith Evancie ‘12, Matt Sellers ‘11, and Cathy Liu ‘10) to Chengdu, Sichuan, once again to volunteer for Machik’s Summer Enrichment Program. They taught English and a variety of civics and arts subjects to students from rural villages all over the Tibetan Plateau. During their trip, they made regular blog entries on our website to chronicle their experiences.
Our 2009 Teaching and Training Project in Chengdu included seven volunteers from Cornell (Sonia Jarrett ‘12, Ming Ming Jiang ‘12, David Lee ‘10, Holly Moulton ‘11, Audrey Keranen ‘12, Liang Xiang ‘10, and Jenny Zhang ‘11) who went to Chengdu from July 13 to August 18 to participate in Machik’s Summer Learning Program 2009. They, along with other Machik volunteers, taught a variety of subjects, including English, science, art, music, health, and much more, and led activities and field trips for 51 Tibetan students, the majority from rural Tibetan villages all over the Sichuan and Qinghai provinces. Connie McCabe and Candy Darnell, ESL teachers of Lake Forest Academy, will be going to Yingtan in Jiangxi for the 2007 TTP. Having the training in Yingtan (which contains 4 districts including Yujiang) will enable teachers over a larger geographical area to participate in the training.

In summer 2005 , Richard Zhao, Chair of Operation D.E.E.P., stayed in Yujiang for D.E.E.P.’s first teaching project. It was a very unique experience for him to live in the less developed part of China for three weeks. During the first week, he taught English to the students at Jindun, Nixia, and Huangxi Elementary Schools. The week after, he gave training to a group of twenty English teachers from Yujiang. During his final week Zhao hosted a delegation group of 21 faculty members from Lake Forest Academy and took them around Yujiang to show them the conditions in which China’s underprivileged students studied.
