About Us

Cornell Piano Society provides a community for pianists and piano fans in the Cornell community of all ages, abilities, and interests. We provide member-to-member lessons to help beginners sharpen their skills and to help intermediate students keep up with their practicing and performing. We hold formal and informal concerts throughout the year. We host various social events to foster a community of people on campus who love piano. We collaborate with other organizations on campus who are looking for pianists. We connect our members with resources on campus including university lessons, master classes, performance opportunities, visiting musicians, and more.

In Fall 2008, we provided lessons to over 50 students with the help of over 30 volunteer teachers! We also held an informal and a formal concert, taught two levels of theory classes weekly, hosted a movie screening, held a teachers' appreciation banquet, hired one new officer, and formed two committees to help with advertising and events planning. Membership rose above 100 paid members for the first time in the club's history, and we kept over 500 people updated on our club's activity via our mailing list.

In Fall 2009, we were able to provide lessons to over 80 students with the help of 35 volunteer teachers! We began offering private theory lessons in an effort to increase the quality of lessons and CPS. We hired another new officer and gained several committee members, which gave us even more opportunities for growth. We were able to host new, exciting events, such as a multicultural concert. In addition, our mailing list increased to over 700 people!

Dues

We require official members to pay semesterly dues of $10 if you are an affiliate of Cornell, or $15 if you are not an affiliate (e.g. Ithaca residents, etc.). The dues benefit not only the club, but you as well; we have a nice assortment of member benefits! Official members can:
  • Play in club concerts
  • Get discounts on tickets to club events
  • Use club recording equipment
Volunteer piano teachers receive free membership during the semester(s) they teach, free keys to the Lincoln Hall grand piano practice rooms, and can get service hours for Cornell Traditions! Email us for more information.

Meetings

We hold general meetings on a weekly basis. General meetings are held every Saturday at 2:00 pm in B20 Lincoln Hall. They are normally short - we discuss the previous and next weeks' events, and piano in general. Every meeting finishes with open piano time.

Piano and Theory Lessons

Cornell Piano Society specializes in bringing students and teachers together to share our collective love for piano and musical discovery. See Lessons for full details.

Social Events and Concerts

We schedule regular social events, including movie screenings, group attendance at other musical performances on campus, informal concerts, and more. See the home page for updates on upcoming social events. If there is a particular upcoming concert, show, or other event that you would like to propose to the club, please let us know! (Email us with suggestions.) If there is a cost associated with the event, we can provide members discounts on tickets.

We hold at least one formal concert per semester, around the end of classes or the beginning of study week. Remember that only members who pay their dues can perform at these concerts. To sign up to play at our next formal concert, email us. To see all of our events this semester, check out our Events page.

Collaboration

Cornell Piano Society loves working with other organizations on campus! In the past we have supplied pianists for one-time and recurring events, (e.g. Johnson Museum Club, Welcome Weekend committee). If your organization is interested in working with us, email us.
